Joe Cooper has spent twenty years working across the HE sector in a range of permanent and voluntary roles across the student and staff experience. His career to date has had a particular focus on providing great experiences for students and staff. He started launching the first community FM student radio station in the UK, reforming childcare for students and staff at the University of Kent and gaining recognition for student volunteering on degree transcripts. Kent Union made regular appearances the Sunday Times ‘Best 100 Companies to work for’ list and it was during this time that Joe developed a focus on employee engagement and developing great places to work. Joe spent four years as managing director at Imperial College (Students’) Union, leading a financial and organisational turnaround, achieving Investors in People Gold status and breaking records for student participation in activities and democracy. Joe joined Imperial College as Deputy Director for HR in 2016 where he has led a reform of HR service delivery, staff engagement and the use of data to support the development of the staff experience. He is a trustee at Christ Church Students Union in Canterbury, where he studied. He thoroughly enjoys being involved with Wonkhe as an advisor on strategy, people and culture, and business development, becoming a Non-Executive director in 2019.
